Brilliant Instagram Account Satirizes Jiu-Jitsu Community as Nightmare Cult

A new satire king has arrived on the mixed martial arts scene, and it has established powers quaking in their boots. Playing off the humanizing photo projects made famous by Humans of New York, the account shares stories of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners but turns the format on its head by replacing natural and personal photos that give you an insight into the subject with an endless wall of blankly staring faces.

Offering a biting criticism of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu culture, with many of its biggest names preaching loyalty and obedience over individualism, and rote grinding over enjoyment of a fun activity, it also reflects the often dangerous power dynamics those in charge can use to exploit those below them in uncomfortable ways, rendering them unable to ask questions about why they’re receiving special treatment, whether it’s okay to to be asked out for a meal with a coach who is 20-years their senior or why a headshot would require its subject to be shirtless.

We don’t know about you, but we’ll be keeping an eye on this hilarious send-up merchant to see what they do next.
