It’s rare in mixed martial arts for an athlete to go out on top, but the UFC Women’s Featherweight Division Amanda Nunes did just that Saturday night after defending her UFC Bantamweight Title in a dominant performance against Irene Aldana at UFC 289. The retirement was met by near universal praise and respect from her fellow fighters, barring from former foe Julianna Pena who expressed her outrage at being denied the chance to receive a second consecutive lopsided beating after her upset win to briefly claim the title. The UFC is expected to reallocate the resources it has committed to promoting and growing the division into a new pen for the office.
